The Magic
is Fading

"The best interface is no interface — or as little as possible."

Disney Parks and Cruises are among the most magical places on Earth, but guests are repeatedly pulled away from the wonder of the physical experience and locked into a cumbersome interface that adds stress and anxiety to an already overstimulated mind.

Their phone batteries are draining, and so is the magic, as they long for a guided and highly functional experience. To inform our design direction, we explored three key research areas: Disney's century-long history, the real guest experience at the parks, and best-in-class emotional and immersive experiences.

Five Ways the
App Breaks the Spell

Current State
Feature OverloadOverloaded with features and transactional patterns that bury the experience.
Advertising SurfaceUsed as an upsell and advertising surface rather than a guest companion.
Visually CorporateLacking Disney's emotional essence — visually generic, not magical.
OverstimulatingComplex and overwhelming in an already high-stimulus environment.
Battery DrainingEncouraged constant phone use, pulling guests away from the physical magic.

Four
Big Ideas

Our research led us to four distinct design directions, each drawing from a different facet of Disney's emotional legacy.

The
Looking
Glass

Inspired by the starlights to Neverland and Cinderella's glass slipper — a serene interface as a digital window into the magic of Disney.

01
Light as Guide
Light serves as a navigational metaphor — guiding guests toward what matters without demanding attention.
02
Glass as Frame
Translucent surfaces create a subtle digital frame, allowing the physical park experience to take center stage.
03
Ambient Modes
Day, night, and sunset modes build an emotional bridge between the interface and the living park around it.
